ABOUT LOS LUNAS

Today, Los Lunas is one of New Mexico’s fastest-growing communities and is home to about 19,000 residents as of mid‑2023—a 10% population increase since 2020. The village thrives as a regional economic hub, with major employers such as the Meta (Facebook) data center, Walmart, and Niagara Bottling contributing to job growth and development. Its attractive blend of small‑town charm and modern convenience includes well‑planned neighborhoods, parks, recreational facilities, educational resources like UNM’s Valencia Campus, and ample retail and outdoor amenities—creating a vibrant and evolving community grounded in heritage while looking toward the future.

Los Lunas, nestled in the Rio Grande Valley of north-central Valencia County, has deep roots stretching back to the Spanish colonial era. The original land grant was issued in 1716, and the name “Los Lunas” derives from the prominent Luna family who became influential landowners in the area by the late 1700s. The village officially incorporated in 1928, but long before that, it served as a significant stop along the historic Camino Real trade route and was part of early alignments of U.S. Route 66. Its rich history is preserved in local landmarks like the Museum of Heritage & Arts, which chronicles much of the area’s past and cultural heritage.
