ABOUT GALLUP.
Gallup, New Mexico, known as the “Heart of Indian Country,” is a culturally rich city nestled along historic U.S. Route 66 and Interstate 40, roughly halfway between Albuquerque, NM and Flagstaff, AZ. It serves as a trade and cultural hub on the edge of the Navajo and Zuni reservations. Founded in 1881 as a railroad outpost, Gallup grew into a vibrant hub for coal mining and trade, especially with nearby Navajo and Zuni communities. Its downtown historic district still reflects this legacy, with preserved Route 66 architecture, colorful murals, and landmarks like the famous El Rancho Hotel, which once hosted Hollywood stars filming Westerns. Gallup continues to serve as a gateway to the Navajo Nation and remains a vital center for Native American art, culture, and commerce.
Surrounded by red rock landscapes and steeped in indigenous history, Gallup offers access to stunning natural and cultural sites, including Red Rock Park and nearby ancient ruins like Chaco Canyon. The Gallup Cultural Center honors Navajo Code Talkers and regional traditions through exhibits and art. Each year, the city hosts the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, one of the oldest and most vibrant celebrations of Native American culture in the country. With its deep-rooted heritage, artistic spirit, and rugged beauty, Gallup offers an authentic and unforgettable Southwest experience.
